A History of European Art

August 24, 2010

The Estes Park Senior Center is offering a new course in September and October - “A History of European Art.”  This series will showcase 48 DVD (video) lectures by Professor William Kloss, an independent art historian long connected with the seminar and tour programs of the Smithsonian Associates at the Smithsonian Institution.  The six-week course will be held on Thursdays beginning September 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in room 102 at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street.  The course is free and open to the public. No registration is required and participants may attend any or all sessions.   Betty Dutton, artist and board member of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center Inc., will act as facilitator.

This DVD lecture is produced by The Great Courses, a twenty-year-old educational company dedicated to producing engaging audio and video lectures by professors from leading universities.   This highly visual series contains more than 850 images of drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and architecture spanning more than a thousand years of art history.  Participants will learn to see deeply into a work of art.  This series will be an engaging demonstration on how to view art with understanding and pleasure using five basic elements; subject, interpretation, style, context and emotion.

For example, Professor Kloss offers this intriguing insight into the great work of art, the Mona Lisa.  “The famous smile in Leonardo's painting may be a pun on the sitter's married name, which means "joyous" in Italian.  Renaissance ideals of decorum could also have influenced the expression.  A 16th-century Italian writer suggested that a fashionable woman should smile "as if you were smiling secretly; not in an artificial manner, but as though unconsciously and accompanied by certain movements of the eyes."

Support for Gandparents Raising Grandchildren

August 24, 2010

The Estes Park Senior Center and the Larimer County Office on Aging will present a program on
“The Larimer County Alliance for Grandfamilies” on Tuesday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m. at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street.  No registration is needed for this free program.

Katy Mason, Program Coordinator for the Larimer County Office on Aging, will discuss issues and challenges related to grandparents raising grandchildren.  She will present information on what the Larimer County Alliance for Grandfamilies (LCAG) is doing to support grandparents and other relative caregivers who are raising children.

The 2000 U.S. Census Bureau reports that 2.4 million grandparents in America are acting as caregivers and have primary responsibility for grandchildren under the age of 18.  Of those people, 39% have had responsibility for their grandchildren for over five years.  Caring for grandchildren often involves life-changing decisions that impact older caregivers.

The Larimer County Alliance for Grandfamilies is a coalition of grandparents, relative caregivers, professionals and other community members.  Their mission is to provide local support, referral and advocacy to caregivers who are raising their grandchildren.  LCAG also educates public and private agencies, community organizations and judicial and legislative systems concerning the needs of both caregiver grandparents and the children.   LCAG provides support groups, community awareness activities, respite care and education to grandparents and other caregivers of children.  For more information on LCAG, please visit the website at www.fortnet.org/lcgrg or call (970) 622-7311.

Heart Health Screenings Offered to Northern Colorado Communities

August 16, 2010

In observance of National Cholesterol Month in September 2010, the Healthy Hearts Club and the Aspen Club of the Poudre Valley Health System (PVHS) will collaborate to provide community heart health screenings to adult residents in Northern Colorado.  The Estes Park Senior Center is partnering with PVHS to offer a local screening on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at the Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street.  Screenings will run from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and appointments are necessary.  Please call the PVHS Aspen Club at either 495-8560 or 624-1860 to schedule a time. A $15 donation to the Poudre Valley Health System Foundation is appreciated.

Cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, the number one and number three killers of Americans. According to the American Heart Association, in 2006, 45% of adults had total cholesterol levels above 200 mg/dL and 16% had levels above 240 mg/dL. The goal is to have a total cholesterol level below 200mg/dL.  Anyone can have high cholesterol.  It does not matter whether a person is thin, overweight, young or old.

According to Laura Dvorak, RN, BSN and Healthy Hearts Club Coordinator for the Poudre Valley Health System,   “If your cholesterol is not at a healthy level, there are many things you can do to improve it.  First, consider making changes to your lifestyle.  Eating more healthfully and exercising can improve your overall well-being as well as your heart health.  If lifestyle changes are not enough, you may need to work with a healthcare provider to find medication, or a combination of medications, to help reach a lower cholesterol level.

The screenings, sponsored by Poudre Valley Health System in collaboration with the Heart Center of the Rockies, provide a blood test for cholesterol analysis, a blood pressure check, stroke risk appraisal, and an individualized discussion about the results.  For those interested in the cholesterol test, a 12-hour fast is required for accurate results.

The Estes Park Senior Center and the Park School District Adult Outreach Program are offering a fall course series “Fused Glass Jewelry Making.”  Artist and professional art educator Anne McCaffrey will teach students how to design and create one-of-a-kind fused glass jewelry pieces.  The 4-week course will be held on Wednesdays, September 15, 22, 29 and October 6, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Estes Park Middle School art room at 1500 Manford Avenue.  The fee includes instruction and all materials.  The total cost is $65 for members of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center Inc. and $75 for non-members.  Registration is now open at the Senior Center.

Glass is an amorphous solid and not a liquid.  As it is heated, it becomes softer and then fluid.  Using bases of clear or colored plain glass, students will add multiple glass pieces with different shapes, textures and colors to create individualized pieces of jewelry. Once the design is complete, glass pieces are then fused together or fired (heat-processed) at a high temperature in a kiln.
