Facing the Frontier:  The Story of the MacGregor Ranch by Betty D. Freudenburg. $7.95. Estes Park was a wilderness in 1873, with land virtually free for the taking.  That year a ranch was begun along Black Canyon Creek and still remains a working ranch and living history museum.  A uniquely American pioneer saga of two families who came west from Wisconsin seeking better health and new lives, and went on to play key roles in the settlement of Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Denver, and Estes Park.

Lyons, Colorado: Birth of a Quarry Town by Diane Goode Benedict. $21.95.  This book chronicles the history of Lyons, where many people on their way to Estes Park began their experience.

A Quick History of Grand Lake Including Rocky Mountain National Park and the Grand Lake Lodge by Michael M. Geary. $9.95.  Geary presents a concise and intriguing account of "the other side," illustrated with a wealth of historic photographs from public collections and from the James family of Grand Lake Lodge.

Rocky Mountain: A Visitor's Companion by George Wuerthner. $19.95. A wonderful resource book that focuses on the history of RMNP, geology, climate and weather, plants, wildlife, and activities such as hiking and Estes Park attractions. 

A Baby's Life in the Rocky Mountains by Ester and Enos Mills. $14.95. Ester (Burnell) Mills homesteaded in the Estes area before marrying Enos Mills. She was the first female nature guide licensed by the National Park Service. This is her story of raising their daughter, Enda.

Diversion: The Politics, Planning, and Construction of the Colorado-Big Thompson Water Project 1935-1985. $16.00 Archived photos and taped interviews with project engineers and mines tell the multi-decade, multi-million dollar story of bringing water from Colorado's western slope under the Continental Divide and Rocky Mountain National Park to irrigate and power the eastern High Plains. DVD, 31 minutes, produced by the Estes Park Museum and the Estes Park Public Library.

Flood! The Lawn Lake Dam Break and Estes Park Flood of July 15, 1982. $16.00. The actual broadcasts from Estes Park radio station KSIR are matched with dramatic slides and photographs to present the story of tragedy, destruction and restoration in a premier vacation town. DVD, 18 minutes, produced by the Estes Park Museum and the Estes Park Public Library.

Homesteading Big Owl by Katherine Garetson. 10.95. This book gives the personal narrative of a woman homesteader. She homesteaded 160 acres of mountain property between 1914 and 1919 in the Allenspark area.

The Highlands Vision: A History of Highlands Presbyterian Camp and Retreat Center, Allenspark, Colorado by Patricia Welker. $15.00. A concise history of Highlands Camp, including photographs and maps.

Up and Down the St. Vrain Canyon by James W. Schaack. $6.30. This book gives you natural and cultural history set to mile markers along Highway 7 between Allenspark and Lyons.

A History and Tour of the Stanley Hotel by Susan Davis. $5.00 Covers everything from the groundbreaking of this Estes Park landmark to its role in the Shining.

A Concise History of the Stanley Hotel by Ron Lasky. $5.99 This booklet has room-by-room history of the Hotel.

The Historic Fall River Hydroplant by JJ Rutherford. $4.95. This booklet chronicles the history of the hydroplant, built by F.O. Stanley to power his hotel in 1909. It was added on to over the years and illustrates the growth of Estes Park.

The Stanleys: Renaissance Yankees by Susan Davis. $6.95 A look at the Stanley twins, F.O. and F.E., and their industrial accomplishments.

Apples of the Mummy's Eye: The Dickerson Sisters by Elyse Deffke Bliss from interviews with Alice C. Dickerson. $17.95.  This well illustrated, revised, and expanded edition chronicles the history of Alice and Helen Dickerson and their homestead life on the Upper Buckhorn.

National Parks and the Woman's Voice by Polly Welts Kaufman. $18.95. Kaufman presents the untold story of women's contributions to the national parks.

The Great Western Railway, Kenneth Jessen, J.V. Publications, 2007.   The Great Western Railway was a subsidiary of the Great Western Sugar Company, designed to bring freshly harvested sugar beets in from the fields of north-central Colorado to Great Western factories for processing.  It also hauled raw materials to factories and delivered refined sugar to common carriers.  The short line still survives today.  This book provides an overview of the railroad from its beginning to modern times.  $24.95.  150 pages.

The Natural West: Environmental History in the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains by Dan Flores. $29.95. This book offers essays reflecting the natural history of the American West by one of its most respected environmental historians.

African Americans on the Western Frontier. Edited by Monroe Lee Billington and Roger D. Hardaway. $27.50. The African America western experience during the frontier era is a story that is rich and diverse. Fifteen authors highlight the contributions African American men and women made to the western frontier.  

Scots in the North American West, 1790-1917 by Ferenc Morton Szasz. $29.95.
